I’m Fi and I live in Bristol with my good friend and their cute ginger cat Ralf. I’m really looking forward to talking to wonderful Karuna supporters on the phone over the coming weeks to show appreciation for their support and talk about the life-changing work Karuna are currently doing around menstrual exile. Outside of volunteering with Karuna, I love spending time with my friends, playing various sports and trying out new creative projects.
I’m appreciating getting to understand the spectrum of issues relating to menstrual exile. There isn’t one problem which can be solved with one solution. Specifically, menstrual exile has a big impact on girls’ eduction including some not being able to attend at all. Those that are able to attend face bullying, poor or non-existent sanitation facilities and lack of access to sanitary pads. Some are forbidden from taking lunch during their period. This has a huge effect on mental wellbeing of girls and can lead to them dropping out of school altogether. Amongst those who are working for the Karuna projects there is a wholehearted belief menstrual exile can end, providing hope for future generations.

My name is Amalavasin which means “He who abides in purity ” very much an aspirational name! I live on the east coast of Ireland in a little fishing village called Clogherhead. I am doing this appeal because connecting with people is a spiritual practice that gives me a lot of joy. I love to laugh and make other people do the same. I also really enjoy walking on the beach near my home, baking cakes and meditating. One of my main challenges doing this telephone appeal and I done many of them is as always to give space for our supporters to tell me there stories. I might also find it a bit challenging to stay present at times as I can get quite tired in the evenings.
Soph’s introduction really inspired me as it put faces on the individuals that our fundraising will help. Her passion for the projects and her love for the women who we are focusing on is the “gold” as it really touched my heart and motivated me to call as many of our supporters as possible and perhaps inspire them to give to Karuna. I look forward to this with much excitement and love ❤️

My name is Britta Christine, I live in Bethnal Green, London, in a Buddhist community.
I joined this appeal because I appreciate Karuna’s unique approach to fundraising and the community-led, holistic approach. I’m really interested in learning fundraising as a spiritual (and transformative) practice and hope to be contributing to one of their incredible projects in a small way. I look forward to speaking with Karuna’s supporters about the women and girls in Nepal.
Outside of volunteering I enjoy meeting with friends, strolling around London and in nature, movement, water, learning new skills (dancing and carpentry for example), studying, taking in art, music and meditation.

This is my fourth time being a volunteer fundraiser for Karuna. What keeps me coming back? It’s the (somewhat unusual) approach of ‘fundraising as a spiritual practice’. The goal is to raise money. Fact. But the process involves connecting with myself and noticing how I act, speak, think, breathe, and operate in the world. It’s a practice that requires me to stay in the present moment and be open to whatever happens. That isn’t always easy, but I trust that it’s where growth happens. And, by meeting Karuna supporters, I’m reminded that although this world is often a difficult place, it’s also full of beautiful, kind, generous humans.
